Oncept: A Vaccine for Treatment of Malignant Melanoma in Dogs

Malignant melanoma is a type of cancer we commonly see in dogs. The tumours often grow in the mouth, causing bad breath, increased salivation, bleeding, poor appetite, or affecting passage of food or air. Sometimes they grow on the skin (face, trunk, and feet) as well. Because of the aggressive nature of malignant melanoma, tumours often grow quickly and spread to other parts of the body. Without treatment, survival time is reported to be weeks to months.

Treatment of oral malignant melanoma often requires aggressive surgery, with follow up immunotherapy - an innovative DNA-based vaccine called Oncept. At VSH, treatment of this type of cancer means collaboration between the Surgery and Internal Medicine departments, as well as follow-up visits with the referring family veterinarian. With appropriate treatment, survival time with good quality of life can often be significantly prolonged.

If your pet has an abnormal growth in the mouth or anywhere on the body, please visit your family veterinarian. Early diagnosis with any disease gives treatment the best chance of success.
